Review of the Evolution Excel

An impressive feature of this Evolution Excel is that it can handle almost any food waste produced by a kitchen and has a jam-sensor circuit that will increase power and torque so any jams are quickly addressed without manual intervention.

Grinding Components

The 3 stage grinding chamber has a GrindShear Ring, Tri-Action Lug, and Undercutter Disk to puree any food waste. This means you no longer have to meticulously segregate food waste. Just remove the large bones because this disposal unit can cut through small bones, coffee ground, banana peels and other fruit and vegetable peels without skipping a cycle. It also has a reset button which should be activated after you remove any lodged food.

The continuous feed InSinkErator Evolution Excel 1.0 HP boasts of 2 technologies: the MultiGrind technology and the SoundSeal technology although these are also available in the lower-priced models. The almost $315 price tag may be justified because of its size and 3 grind stages. The components are also almost all stainless steel or steel and the warranty is one of the longest at 7 year in-house limited warranty on parts and labor.

How Quiet is this InSinkerator?

The SoundSeal technology is to ensure a quieter operation while the MultiGrind guarantees that the food waste it is feed is ground to a pulp or into a puree. However, why anyone would want food waste to be demolished so finely is perplexing unless your waste goes into a renewable energy treatment facility.

Size

This U.S. made twin size garbage disposal weighs about 25.5 pounds and measure 14 inches x 11 inches x 14 inches. Looking at it, it is a beauty and looks like it belongs on a kitchen counter top rather than beneath the kitchen sink. The outer body is brushed stainless steel and it is said (by the InSinkErator) to be one of the most advanced garbage disposals in the world. They justify this by saying it can handle tons of waste and do it quickly because if the power of its super insulated induction motor.

With the Evolution Excel, you will experience a very pleasant hum instead of an irritating grating sound and almost no vibration because the sink mount and the tailpipe are designed to be anti-vibration with its rubber bushings. It also has a sink baffle that muffles any sound that can come from the top of disposal unit.

How Easy is to Install the Evolution Excel?

Installation of this garbage disposal unit should be easy if you are swapping one InSinkErator model for another – if you are, then you very likely already have a similar mount. It’s a heavy a one-man operation, but you can twist, unlock, replace and then twist and lock the new unit in place. However, if you are changing unit from another brand to InSinkErator, it will be a little more complicated but should still take less than 1.5 hours.  Prepare putty, a flat screwdriver, Allen wrench, pliers, and a Philips screwdriver, plus electrical supplies before installing so you can go straight thru without having to run out and buy something.

When you buy the Evolution Excel, which is standard 115V, you get the mount, a Jam buster wrench, sink baffle, clamp, anti-vibration tailpipe mount, removable splash guard, stainless steel stopper, and manual. You will need to buy a switch, outlet, or power cord depending on the set-up you want.

Using the Evolution Excel

You will notice that the seal is stiffer than most other brands which could affect water flow. The reason for this is to stop the waste from spitting out. With such a powerful motor and 3 stage cycle, this is entirely possible so the stiffer seal will keep your sink from experiencing backflow. If the water is not flowing as fast as you want, you can slow down in feeding the disposal unit or poking it a little to increase downflow although you will have to be careful and shut it off before you do this.

On the downside, the power it has can lead to overheating but you can counter this by using cold water or even ice cubes if truly necessary. The overheating will only happen if you stress the grinding process with thick chicken bones and other similar food waste.

Also, even though it can handle a whole apple, the process is slower than usual. The lack of noise is also  safety problem because it can deceive a person into thinking it isn’t working.  Finally, even if your unit is under warranty, if the company finds something in the disposal unit that shouldn’t be there, you will have to pay for their services

Summary

The InSinkErator Evolution Excel is a major purchase at over $300 but it gets the job done properly with its 3 stage process. It has a 4.7 rating on Amazon which speaks well for its performance. Installation is the biggest hurdle with this product because it is heavy and big. However, expect very little noise and almost no vibration. Also, it can be a little slow in processing the waste but there is a remedy to make it run faster. A good product for medium to large kitchens but very expensive for home use.
