InSinkErator Evolution 3/4 HP Compact Household Garbage Disposal Review

Moen A1SPC garbage disposal The InSinkErator Evolution Compact has the most reviews of any disposer on Amazon – over 6,000 satisfied customers review this well-made and household food waste disposer that fits into smaller spaces without compromising on build: it provides good quality and durability (with Amazon review ratings of 4.8 out of 5).

The Evolution Compact provides two grind stages and, as you would guess from its name, is smaller than its bigger brother, the 1.0 HP Evolution (the bigger model also provides three grind stages to tackle the toughest food wastes).

The unit’s compact size makes it a good solution for smaller kitchens with restricted space in the cabinet under the sink and it features InSinkErator’s Quick Lock mounting mechanism making it easy to fit.

InSinkErator produces a range of disposers, all with a simple fit feature, stainless steel fittings and with different horsepower motors to suit different sizes of household.

Lastly, there’s a 4-year in-home warranty on parts on labor.

The grey InSinkErator Evolution Compact 3/4 HP is a replacement home garbage disposal that boasts SoundSeal  and MultiGrink technologies supposedly to keep the unit and powerful enough to grind tough food wastes. It uses the 2 grind stage process with stainless steel grind components. The 3/4 HP is sufficient for most homeowners’ needs although being a replacement system, it assumes you have an existing set-up and only need to install the unit. It is a good product you can expect to work well for at least 8 years.

Main Review of the Evolution Compact

The InSinkErator Evolution Compact 3/4 HP is a continuous compact garbage disposal product that targets people who already have an existing garbage disposal set-up and are looking for a replacement. If you do not have this system in your sink, you will have to invest in the plumbing set-up and the services of an electrician. You will also have to buy some parts particularly the power cord, switch, and plumber’s putty, among others.

The Evolution Compact has 2 unique technologies. They are the MultiGrind technology with its 2 grind phase system to handle tough food waste not usually put into a disposal and the SoundSeal technology which insulates the ¾ HP induction motor so it’s quiet and does not vibrate.

This grey garbage disposal system sells for $174 and while the 34.6 oz grind chamber is not made of stainless steel, its grind components are. It is compact and good for small spaces with dimensions of 13 inches x 9.3 inches x 13 inches and weighing 19.2 pounds.

What’s the Warranty Period?

The 4 year in-home limited warranty is on replacement parts and labor but is a little complicated. There are free house calls and one should take advantage of this because if you try to repair on your own or hire someone to do it, the warranty is no longer valid. Also, you will have to show proof of purchase and if, for any reason, the company representative doubts your document, they reserve the right to determine the warranty period based on the serial number of the unit. However, if you are not the original owner requesting the service, the warranty will not be honored. In addition, if this model is used in an industrial setting, the warranty will not be honored. The warranty agreement has a lot more do’s and don’ts and all the information is included in the package when it is delivered to you.

How Noisy is the Evolution Compact?

The upside of this Evolution Compact are: its size, the fact that it is quiet and does not vibrate, and it is easy to install. When you buy it, you will receive the mount, jam buster wrench, sink baffle, clamp, anti-vibration tailpipe mount, stopper, and instruction manual. You can expect this product to be productive for at least 7 to 8 years after which it will slowly start to lose power and efficiency. It can liquefy most of toughest home kitchen food waste although there are limitations to what it can process such as grease, oil, large bones, and non-food items. You also have to use cold water when running the disposal.

How Easy is Installing the Evolution Compact?

Installing it very easy with the quick lock system but if you have to work with a sink that has never had a garbage disposal, you’d be well-advised to get a professional to handle the job especially if you want it to be connected to a dishwasher.

The power consumption of this disposal is about 25 cents based on a 5 second cycle and taking into consideration the start-up current.  This figure was arrived based on 8.1 amps at 115 V and ¾ HP or about 58% efficient.

On the downside, it is only limited to 115V and if you are buying it to replace a broken unit, check the dimensions first. You may need to buy a installation kit. The sink flange is made of chrome so you can expect it to eventually get scratched and old-looking.  Also, as it gets older, it will start to be less quiet and eventually will not be able to handle even the simple foods like pasta, celery, and potato peels.

In addition, it does not have reverse rotation but many garbage disposals don’t have this feature anyway.  If you want to remove something that is stuck, you will have to do it manually from under the sink. Also, while it can be connected to a home septic  system, it is not septic-safe. This isn’t cause for alarm unless you abuse the use of the garbage disposal.  Sadly, if you only have a single bowl sink, expect the disposal to drain slowly.

Finally, while the 4 year warranty is promising, it is pro-rated starting from the day you buy it which means under the agreement, if you deserve a refund, the amount given to you will be based on the number of years you’ve used it. This means that if you have enjoyed for 2 years, then you get half the price you paid for back, not full purchase price

  • The Evolution Compact features InSinkErator’s SoundSeal insulation system and anti-vibration mounts to help reduce sound transmission and providing quiet operation; it features with special baffles to reduce noise with a claim that it’s up to 30% quieter than typical waste disposers

Summary

The InSinkErator Evolution Compact 3/4 HP garbage disposal gets a high 4.7 star rating on Amazon because it does what it is suppose to do – and it does it quietly. However, it does not have a  good reputation for lasting more than 8 to 10 years and the limited warranty is only for 4 years. Thus, if you are willing to invest in a replacement after several years, this is a good choice to make.
