The L-8000 Legend Series has a lifetime warranty on corrosion and grinding components and maximum grinding speed of 2800 RPM. It never jams and performs very well once you have successfully installed it according to your needs. It comes as a complete package with all the parts needed to self-install, but as always it’s best if installed by a professional, especially on the electrical connection. It’s an excellent disposal unit and will give you value for your money as it will work well for many years.

Review of the Waste King L-8000

The Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1 Horsepower is a hard-working garbage disposal with a maximum high speed of 2800 RPM. Its swivel impellers and grinding components are made of stainless steel allowing it to handles even the toughest of kitchen garbage like , chicken bones, thick fruit and vegetable peels. It comes as a complete set with gasket, sink flange, drain elbow and a removable splash guard so you will not have to run out and buy additional accessories. You may have to make adjustments during the installation like if you want to hard wire it or use it with a dishwasher.  If you hard wire the unit, you are not voiding the mechanical warranty.

The Waste King L-8000 weighs 14.9 pounds and is 110v mains powered (it does not require batteries!); the power cord is a reasonable 36 inch length, and will need a socket that supports 7 amps. It is a continuous feed with a front reset button.

Grinding Components

The glass-filled nylon grinding chamber is the reason the company can give you a lifetime warranty on corrosion. The grinding chamber set-up is also the reason why the disposal is not as noisy as many others although it isn’t very quiet either. When you are running the disposal, you can hear above the sound but the droning noise is also audible in the next room. More significant than the corrosion warranty is the limited mechanical warranty for the first owner. The company has said that it will honor the commitment on mechanical failure and replace the unit but only if the original buyer is still using it. Of course, the company has listed the items that should not be disposed of using the Waste King. Using it on these items will nullify the lifetime mechanical warranty.

How Easy is to Install the L-8000?

Unfortunately, the no-hassle installation claim is not exactly accurate even with the EZ mount system. Waste King even recommends that the buyer hire a professional plumber to install the system unless the owner has previous experience with similar installations. Improper installations will cause leaking and some movement.

Also, if your previous garbage disposal is a different brand to Waste King and does not use the EZ mount system, you will need to make some adjustments. A 3 bolt mount system, which is the other type of mounting system used for disposal units has a different set and you will need to buy a kit to convert to the EZ mount system or remove the 3 bolt system and install the EZ mount system. This kit is bought separately.

Whether  you have an existing set-up or not, expect to spend 1 to 2 hours installing it. One of the problems with installation is the locking ring on the sink flange which battles with the rubber gasket until you find the right position – and this can take some time and a lot of patience. You should also consider having some plumber’s putty for sealing.

You will also discover that you cannot use any other brand of disposal flange because it will not work with this Waste King. This shouldn’t be a major issue unless you do not like the design of the flange and stopper.

Using the Waste King L8000

On the downside, large food pieces like a rotten apple will not fit the sink opening so you will have to chop up large pieces first. You will also have to get used to the start-up noise and the grinding noise which has been described as “noisy” to “not-as-noisy as my previous one.” Also, the sink ring is made of chrome which tends to look scratchy after a while.

All things considering, the L-800 is highly recommended with minimal issues that don’t really count if you get the right guy to install it for you.

Features of the Waste King L-8000

  • The Waste King L-8000 has a 1.0 hp (horsepower) electric motor (compare this with others in our unique comparison chart). As a comparison, basic disposals have motors with a relatively low 0.3 hp motor, and a standard family-ready unit would have a power rating of 0.75 to 1.0 hp.
  • The unit has stainless steel internal grinding components that ensure the mechanism will last without rusting or degrading. Compare this with the less durable galvanized steel used in cheaper units
  • Importantly, for anyone who’s tried to hold a conversation near a food waste disposer, the L-8000 has additional sound insulation which gives you a chance of continuing your dinner party chat ! This is partly due to additional sound proofing but also a nylon (not metal) grinding chamber that reduces noise of grinding
  • Lastly, Waste King provide an unlimited lifetime guarantee and so if it develops a mechanical fault, Waste King promises to replace the unit in its lifetime in your own home.

The dimensions of the garbage disposal are 15.5 inches from the bottom of the disposal to the underside of the sink, the drain center is 7.5 inches from the underside, and 13. 25 inches from the top of the disposal (sink flange). The disposal unit itself is 9 inches x 9 inches x 14.2 inches.  It comes with an adaptor for dishwasher set-up and a knock-out plug which you will have to remove to connect the dishwasher drain hose.  One advantage this model has over other brands is the fact that it does not need a lot of under-counter space unless you have very little space beneath your sink.

  • 9 inch diameter (at its widest point)
  • 12.25 inch height
